Are You Relevant?    Velocity Care Group

1.           Are you relevant?

Jesus was the most relevant communicator of all time

He spoke about the current problems between Jews and Gentiles including the religious Jewish leaders thinking they know it all and Gentiles feeling unworthy of salvation.

2.           Jesus always asked Questions.

In fact, He knew how to ask the right question.

Not, “Do you want to come to the synagogue?” (church)

meet me at 6:30.”  Don’t’ get me wrong.  It’s great to invite people to our meetings, but it’s more important to “go into” their “world” and talk to them there – on their turf.

He spoke to their need.

“Do you want to be healed?”

“Want do you want from Me?”   Blind Barnamaus

“Do you have something to drink?” to the prostitute at   the local “drinking fountain”

“Who do you say that I am?”  He asked His Disciples

Jesus got people to think.

He learned the art of asking questions, knowing what the answer was.  He was always testing people to see if they just wanted something from Him or if they really wanted Him.

Jesus was relevant.

3.           Jesus knew how to listen

This obviously derived from knowing how to ask the right question.

Learn to ask the right question then listen with all of your understanding.  Ask God for the gift of compassion – to be fully there when someone is talking to you – not “zoning out” wondering what you’re going to say next.

4.           Jesus was Authentic

He was straight to the point, down to earth, and completely real with people.

He communicated love.  He really loved people.

He made Himself vulnerable – vulnerable to questioning and persecution – vulnerable enough to relate to their humanity.  He was willing to be misunderstood.

Why?  He was confident in who He was by His Father.

He was sure of his mission, “to save that which was lost.”

Jesus gave us great examples of how to live a relevant, authentic life.

Are you real with people, authentic, relevant?

Take time this week to read through some stories in the Gospels (Matthew – John) and get a glimpse into the life of Jesus.
