Gen 11:3-4 “Come," they said, "let's make
great piles of burnt brick and collect natural asphalt to use as mortar.
4 Let's build a
great city with a tower that reaches to the skies — a monument to our greatness!” NLT
Gen 11:8-9 “In that
way, the LORD scattered them all over the earth; and that ended the building of
the city.
9 That is why the
city was called Babel, because it was there that the LORD confused the people
by giving them
many languages, thus
scattering them across the earth.” NLT
The funny thing is about building yourself a monument –
just like the word itself, everything revolves around “U”.
Monuments are supposed to be used a sign of what God has
done – an agreement, covenant, or promise.
They’re never to be put up by a person only for the
purpose of praising himself.
Saul
made himself a monument – all because of pride. That pride lead him to destruction by God through David.
That
destruction lead him to depression which lead him to suicide.
1
Sam 15:12 "Saul went to Carmel to set up a monument to himself; then he went on
to Gilgal."
Building
a monument in your own name, no matter how tall, is always a small feat.
Absolom,
a son of David, also built himself a monument.
2
Sam 18:18 “During his lifetime, Absalom
had built a monument to himself in the King's Valley, for he had said,
"I have no son to carry on my
name." He named the monument after himself.” NLT
Monuments are temporary, A Legacy is forever.
Mature
Christians, Clutch Student Ministers are more concerned with being
significant in the lives of other students
than
being successful in the eyes of other students. (2X)
Prov.
20:7 says “The just man walks in integrity and his sons are blessed after him.”
As you mature in your Christianity, you take on the
character of Christ and the heart of The Father.
You
should care more about being significant than successful.
“You
can impress people with your gifts and talents, but you impact them with
your life.”
-Richard
Crisco
Practical Steps To Leaving a Legacy,
not a Monument:
1. Pray for them
2. Pray with them
Oswald
Chambers said, “Prayer does not equip us for the greater work, it is the
greater work.”
3.
Be held accountable to them and hold them accountable. –Being open and honest
about
sin and struggles.
4. Be transparent and approachable – Let them
know that they can come to you!
5. Love them, encourage them & correct them – with love.
Elijah
mentored Elisha. He impacted him left a legacy in
Elisha’s heart. 2 Kings 2:6-12
If
you don’t destroy your old identity, you’ll be tempted to pick it back up.
Live
for God and live for others. Impact,
don’t impress. Leave a legacy not a monument.
